KOL Contest lock-down

I posted the general rules for a contest and 5 minutes later it’s locked. I get a PM saying I have to PM the prize to Voivod, and then he’ll unlock my post.

I do, and not only is it unlocked, but he’s removed all traces of the minor hassle he gave me.

To those who don’t play KOL:
“Clovers” are worth about 4.5k “meat” each. Lets assume 4k. 4k * 300 = 1.2 million.

I was going to throw in something really cool and have a second and third place as a surprise, but this … mistrust … has thrown my sweet mood off.

Ok, this is my first contest, but here goes:

For the people who write Greasemonkey scripts, this is a contest for you.

To enter, post your auto-update code in this thread, using the tags to enclose it.

The shortest / simplest code that works and has no errors will win… something.

The prize has yet to be determined, but will be worth at least a million meat. The contest ends in a week’s time (May 5th, 2007)

I figured I should post a follow-up to my surprisingly popular post about being censored.

When it happened I was just shocked, but once that passed I saw it for what it really is…

As someone who linked to the previous post noted, Yahoo and Microsoft are quite chummy. I also wouldn’t find it too suprising if in a few years people would have to find “alternative” search engines to the mainstream (MSN, Yahoo, etc) because of snowballing censorship.

I don’t like the idea… and I don’t like the power struggle it portrays, but with DRM and the root-kit fiasco that the music industry did, and that non-Microsoft programs are given less than 32MB of memory to use in Vista, it’s not a huge leap of logic.

Who knew suggesting a stable, easy to use operating system was risque?

KOL MySQL Connection Error

I was playing KOL today and it stopped responding (I was in chat and it wouldn’t accept / clear my entry). Eventually I got a response:

Could not connect to database server 2:2013 – Lost connection to MySQL server during query

I had seen someone else quote this error about an hour before in chat. I hope this isn’t a sign that KOL’s dying under the stress of everyone playing!

I answered a question a few days ago (I can’t find the link at the moment) that was basically:

Someone got a computer from a friend that has some serious problems with Windows. S/he has none of the disks (XP or restore) and was asking for recommendations.

This was my reply after reading some of the other answers:

If you buy the XP disks you just get that – XP. No MS office, no other programs other than the very basics.

If you’re starting over anyways, grab a blank CD and use imgburn ( http://imgburn.com/ ) to burn an Ubuntu ( http://ubuntu.com/ ) or Kubuntu ( http://kubuntu.com/ ) .iso on there.

Put the burned CD in the CD tray and restart the computer. It doesn’t need a hard drive at all to run – it loads into the computer’s RAM (temporary memory).

K/ubuntu comes fully loaded and thousands of other programs are just a few clicks away – you just look them up in a built in installer, it grabs the stuff needed and installs it all. It’s free in both senses of the word – free of cost and free of obligations.

Yahoo oddness – reloading login page every second with no obvious answer.

Today Yahoo was acting oddly – on the “Sign in to Yahoo!” page it was reloading every second. The actual Yahoo.com or the my.yahoo.com pages were fine.

I saved the page and took a look… Yahoo uses a tonne of Javascripts! But I didn’t really see anything that would do that – the meta-refresh was fine at 600.

I then saw that Adblock Plus was turned off for some reason – I turned it back on and tried again. No change.

I recently changed some settings in CookieSafe and now chose to let Yahoo’s pages set cookies.

No change.

I was running out of ideas… except there’s this flash file (.swf) in the middle of the page and it doesn’t actually show anything. I’m sure it’s for storing data.

Blocked it with Adblock Plus… and now Yahoo’s behaving like normal.

Odd.

Battle of the scents

I was putting all my chai tea into a container – taking apart the tea bags and dumping the tea itself in.

It was potent (mom complained) and the people upstairs decided to spray bad perfume into the heat return (so it’s recirculated into the house).

Mom thought the smell was so bad she turned off the furnace.

I turned it back on about half an hour later and the smell was still raunchy… so I plugged their air return.

5 minutes later and the smell is all but gone.

I win!

Ubuntu: Who Needs Vista?

Back in my university days, when Netscape was the latest web browser on the scene and the Pentium MMX was the power user’s processor of choice, UNIX was part of my everyday life. Since graduating, my chosen desktop operating system has been Windows of some variety. This is partly because it was the most readily available consumer desktop operating system and also because it served me well for the most part.As with most other Windows users I know, I’ve experienced my share of frustrations, lost data and the expense of buying software licences.

With the recent release of Windows Vista, there’s been a big push to get existing Windows users to upgrade although looking at the Vista hardware requirements I’d need to upgrade more than just my operating system. By many accounts, Vista is resource hungry and would require more processing power than my computer hardware can offer.

That doesn’t mean I’m in a bad position because I’m ’stuck’ with Windows XP. I can do everything that I want to with my current set-up so there’s nothing to encourage me to upgrade to Vista. I can continue to build websites, develop software, surf the web, use email, create PDF documents, edit graphics, carry out SEO, in fact everything that I need to run a web design business whilst developing online income streams.

As someone who loves to dabble with gadgets and new technology, I once tried to install SUSE Linux onto a spare PC, but encountered problems early on with drivers for an ethernet card. This put me off Linux for a while, but recently I chanced upon Ubuntu and I must say I’m very impressed with how different the whole experience has been.

If the thought of Linux brings about images of command lines interfaces, having to compile software before you can use it and geeky nerds then you might be surprised to learn that all of those things are still there, but today’s Linux is also graphically driven and very user-friendly.

A Firefox Bankcard! How cool is that?

My bank offered the possibility to use my own image on my bankcard. You could order it through a web interface, so I uploaded the Firefox logo onto mine and picked up the card a few days later from the bank.
